Why Night Watch Pairs With the Righteous Hunter
In our tasting notes, the Righteous Hunter has pronounced pepper that mellows into leather, light wood, dark chocolate and toasted coffee bean, then mocha and toffee sweetness before a peppery finale.
Aged rum's toffee and molasses meet the Righteous Hunter's mocha and toffee sweetness, coffee liqueur matches the toasted coffee bean, and bourbon gives it enough weight to stay even with a full-bodied cigar.
Ingredients
- 1½ oz aged dark rum
- ¾ oz bourbon
- ½ oz coffee liqueur
- 1 tsp demerara syrup (2:1)
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
- Garnish: orange peel and three coffee beans
Syrup note: Demerara syrup (2:1): Stir 2 parts demerara sugar into 1 part hot water until dissolved. Keeps 1 month refrigerated.
How to Make Night Watch
- Add everything to a mixing glass with ice.
- Stir about 30 seconds.
- Strain over one large cube.
- Express an orange peel over the top.
Pairing Tips
- The Righteous Hunter's mocha and toffee arrive after the opening pepper. That's the moment this drink is built for.
- Choose a coffee liqueur that tastes of real coffee rather than syrup. Too much sweetness flattens the pairing.
- This is a strong, spirit-forward drink. One is plenty for one cigar.
